History Of Yoga

      Meaning of yoga in vedas is a yoke. Vedas is collection of texts which contains mantras, songs and rituals which is used by vedic priests of Hindu. There is no doubt about yoga is originated in india. Lord shiva, which is god of hindu is seen as the first yogi.

      Yoga can be seen in indus valley civilization, vedas and upanishads also other religious text of hindu, jain tradition, buddiest tradition, etc,. The historical evidences of the existence of yoga can be seen in the pre-vedic period (3000 BCE). Patanjali defined patanjali's yoga sutras which is systematic presentation of yoga in classical period.He is often known as the father of yoga. Tantra yoga was defined in post-classical period.

Swami Vivekananda.
     Swami vivekananda (1863-1902) is responsible for modern yoga. In 1893, swami vivekananda first visited chicago, united states, to the parliament of the world's religions. His speech on hindu tradition got very popular all over the country and the world. He was the first indian to teach yoga in the west. Raja yoga was the book written by swami vivekananda which was published in 1896. Here are some of the famous inspiration quotes of swami vivekananda.
  • "Arise, awake and stop not until the goal is achieved"
  • "Take risks in your life, if you win, you can lead, if you lose, you can guide"

Swami Shivananda.
    
     In 1920s & 1930s, T. krishnamacharya and other yogis strongly promoted hatha yoga in india. In 1924, T. krishnamacharya opened first hatha yoga schools in mysore, india. In 1936, swami shivananda founded the divine life society on the banks of ganga river. Swami shivananda wrote over 200 books on yoga and established nine ashrams and numerous yoga centers all over the world.
