If you are fresher, they will hire you as trainee engineer in that project.

I suggest go with the large scale construction of building for better result.

 

What is the role of civil engineer in building projects?


Now, the question is what is the role of civil engineer in construction of buildings so one can prepare accordingly. To find that answer let's discuss more about it. 


First let's discuss about different job types. There are many different types of role or post of civil engineer like, site supervisor, graduate engineer trainee (GET), junior civil engineer, senior civil engineer, site engineer, finishing engineer, assistant project manager, project manager, general manager, billing engineer, design draftsman, estimation engineer, BBS engineer, technical assistant, surveyor, etc. 


Different sites requires different types of engineer with different skills, for example, if the site is small(bungalow, small house, etc.) one civil engineer and one supervisor can handle the site.


If there is intermediate or medium size site, like low rise than there are three to four engineers might be required.


Also, different site owner demand different job skills and job work from civil engineer.

Graduate engineer trainee 

 

the role of Fresher site engineer or graduate engineer trainee (GET) is almost nothing in the site.


Trainee engineer will get no salary or very less salary as they might not give any productive output in the project.


If you are fresher then keep one thing in your mind you are doing job for yourself only.


You have to learn so many skills during your training period, like How your project work is going, what is the environment in your site, you have to learn verbal skill or soft skill by observing senior engineer or project manager. in short, You have to learn full work cycle of the project in the beginning.


You can follow some good blogs regarding construction materials, planning, management, structure designarchitectural design, etc.


You should have learn how to check all the item like slab, column, beam sizescolumn beam form work, center-line of footing column. How to check excavation and also how to execute all the construction activities. Also, tests on concrete.


Keep in your mind that working as a site civil engineer is a difficult job as compared to some other desk job as in site you have to use you mantle strength as well as physical strength.

 

It will be hard at the beginning, but trust me once you start running like horse, then nobody can stop you to grow and become successful in your life.

Improve yourself as civil engineer in construction of building at the beginning stage


Here are some of the tips for civil engineers to improve your career in construction of building for beginners.


You have to maintain dairy for daily routine work like labor count material consumption, etc.

Install some of the application like unit converter, scientific calculator, compass app, management applications etc.


gain knowledge in design, planning, execution, management, billings these are core or base of your career.


Wear a good shirts or professional wears, wear good shoes or safety shoes and also if necessary wear helmet. 


Be present in monthly meetings or small meeting even if that meeting doesn't meant to you.


Talk to your boss daily or senior also talk to you labor and learn from them or from you colleagues.


Be serious about safety perspective for you and for your labors also build your image or good personality in your site. Try to become sharp about some basic measurement with your eyes.


Always keep dairy pen and measuring tap with you. Don't think if nobody is watching you than your are start using your mobile or use some time pass things.



Start learning for growth as a civil engineer in construction of buildings


What to learn as a civil engineer on site? here I will discuss.


First, learn every practical activity than go with office skills. Office skills include reading quotations, passing or checking bills, quantity survey, estimate, basic cad drawings, daily progress report, labor count report, material consumption report or material report.


Try to learn basic about construction equipment's use, price, etc.


Follow some civil engineering blog to improve your knowledge on civil engineering. 


Start learning reading all types of drawings such as architectural working drawings, elevations- section drawings, MEPF (mechanical, electrical, plumbing, fire safety), structure drawings, landscape drawings, interior drawings, etc.


You should start analyzing various rates of contractor item some of basic material like cement sand aggregate tiles marble granite bricks etc.


You should be start learning unit of measurement which is very important and basic thing.



Start learning about what is the role of all the members or agency or labors in your project.


Be quick learner, positive thinker, increase your reasoning and critical thinking also, try to be sharp in your work. it is also very important if you want to become project manager.


Increase your observation skills and leadership skills as construction branch requires this kind of skills.


Be sharp in reporting to you boss or senior. At the beginning start with the small and easy tasks like how many bricks used today, how many labors worked today, how much of quantity of work had done today, etc.


Understand the client or your boss, what is your boss wanted from you or in your site think in that direction give some good answers if your boss asks you something.


Try to understand local market and also local labor words.


Be good person in your site with your colleagues, labors and your senior as they all will can help you anytime in your future life.

 

If your boss forget to avail first aid kit than be the first one to tell him to keep first aid kit at site it will make good impression in front of you boss.


Don't take holidays for sometimes. Always come when your site is started and go when your site is closed.


At least try to complete full project if possible because you will learn so many things after completion of one full project.


After several months visit nearby site or your friends site and study work and do analysis and try understand your industry 


Learning new skills as fresher engineer will make a door open for other roles. Now let's discuss about site supervisor. 

 

Site supervisor 


A very first step to enter in site (if you are a non-technical) is site supervisor. No Matter how clever you are during your course in college you have to do supervision of the construction site. 


Supervision is a base in your career. So, always keep in mind that if your base is strong than your career will be the strongest. You could be a high paying personal in your future life.


Site supervisor is basically a non-technical but required a good practical skills. Any graduate or non graduate person can be a site supervisor.



As a site supervisor, you have to supervise all the activities, which is running in your site.


Activities could be excavation, back filling, PCC, footing centering, shuttering, beam-column, slab, column starter, parapet wall, masonry, plaster, diaphragm wall, scaffolding retaining wall, earthwork, landscape, gardening, finishing item like color, flooring, false ceiling, electrical work, fire safety works, fabrication, furniture work, etc.

Learning unit and measurement, area and volume, might be benefits if you are a non technical.
